چکیده
A high-resolution climate archive was reconstructed based on carbon isotope analysis and radiocarbon dating of the Chapman baobab in northeastern Botswana. The baobab, which exhibited an open ring-shaped structure composed six stems, collapsed January 2016 during intense El Niño event. Two samples belonging to oldest stems were investigated order obtain a proxy rainfall record, provides insight into precipitation regime over last millennium, evincing centennial decadal scale variability. results indicate that Medieval Warm Period marked by relatively stable precipitation, whereas variability drought frequency increased Little Ice Age. area has experienced both wetter drier conditions past. wettest millennium registered before 1450 while driest period occurred 1835. For southern Africa, inter-annual is mainly associated with sea surface temperatures Agulhas Current core region, determine east–west displacement tropical temperate troughs. Previous studies suggested positive temperature anomalies Mozambique Channel led eastward movement troughs but record demonstrates westward past, causing South Africa central part Africa. correlation SST reversed after 1900, gradual decrease confirming current aridity trend for contribute better understanding past paleoclimate reconstructions remain scarce.

A 1000-Year Carbon Isotope Rainfall Proxy Record from South African Baobab Trees (Adansonia digitata L.)
A proxy rainfall record for northeastern South Africa based on carbon isotope analysis of four baobab (Adansonia digitata L.) trees shows centennial and decadal scale variability over the last 1,000 years. The record is in good agreement with a 200-year tree ring record from Zimbabwe, and it indicates the existence of a rainfall dipole between the summer and winter rainfall areas of South Afric...
متن کاملA 14,500-year record of landscape change from Okpilak Lake, northeastern Brooks Range, northern Alaska
Analyses of lithology, organic-matter content, magnetic susceptibility, and pollen in a sediment core from Okpilak Lake, located in the northeastern Brooks Range, provide new insights into the history of climate, landscape processes, and vegetation in northern Alaska since 14,500 cal year BP. The late-glacial interval ([11,600 cal year BP) featured sparse vegetation cover and the erosion of min...
متن کاملA multi-proxy lacustrine record of Holocene climate change on northeastern Baffin Island, Arctic Canada
Reconstructions of past environmental changes are critical for understanding the natural variability of Earth’s climate system and for providing a context for present and future global change. Radiocarbon-dated lake sediments from Lake CF3, northeastern Baffin Island, Arctic Canada, are used to reconstruct past environmental conditions over the last 11,200 years. Numerous proxies, including chi...
متن کاملRapid 20th century environmental change on northeastern Baffin Island, Arctic Canada inferred from a multi-proxy lacustrine record
The Arctic has a disproportionately large response to changes in radiative forcing of climate, and arctic lacustrine ecosystems respond sensitively to these changes. The goal of this research is to generate high-resolution climate records for the past two millennia using multiple proxies in order to place 20th and 21st century climate and environmental change into a long-term context. We use a ...
متن کاملIntercomparison of Rainfall Estimates from Radar, Satellite, Gauge, and Combinations for a Season of Record Rainfall
Rainfall products from radar, satellite, rain gauges, and combinations have been evaluated for a season of record rainfall in a heavily instrumented study domain in Oklahoma. Algorithm performance is evaluated in terms of spatial scale, temporal scale, and rainfall intensity. Results from this study will help users of rainfall products to understand their errors. Moreover, it is intended that d...
